National Day of Social Action

Each year, all Freedom Schools sites participate in the National Day of Social Action (NDSA): a collective effort rooted in the Children’s Defense Fund’s mission to build communities where young people grow up with dignity, hope, and joy. The annual social action project centers on a theme identified by CDF Freedom Schools communities as essential to children’s well-being. The purpose of the day is to pass the mic to our scholars. NDSA is youth-led, supported by caring adults, and engages all 13,000 K–12 scholars nationwide.

The 2026 NDSA theme is “Children’s Health and Healing,” focusing on mental health and social-emotional wellness as foundational to children’s ability to thrive. This theme reflects CDF’s belief that emotional well-being is inseparable from academic success, leadership development, and long-term empowerment.

On Wednesday, July 15, our YWCA scholars will lead a powerful program highlighting their voices, passions, and leadership in action. Together, we’ll explore their art gallery installation, hear their empowered voices through spoken word and poetry, and engage in a youth-centered panel discussion rooted in advocacy, healing, and the power of literature.
